Frank was endlessly curious and eager to expand his reach. After experiencing many of his productions at NYCO and elsewhere (e.g., the premiere of Floyd’s Of Mice and Men in Seattle), the last operatic work of his that I saw, in a church here in Manhattan, was a production of Boughton’s The Immortal Hour (seek it out if you’re ever in the mood for a trip into the Celtic occult) in which one of my students was singing the female lead. She told me that Frank’s words when they wrapped it were, “We really baked this one.” And they had.
