Many thoughts occur as to how Porgy and Bess might fulfill itself as the glory of American realistic music theatre. There’s not time for them here, but they would add up to something like Gershwin’s own original definition of its genre, “Folk Opera.”

NEXT TIME: I have seen the Met’s Orfeo ed Euridice (Gluck), but cannot possibly dedicate a full post to it. Maybe I’ll go see what’s up with La Bohème. In any event, the ETA is Nov. 22.
